butterfly facts-butterfly eyes

Posted by aakarsha handa on April 5, 2011 at 6:42 AM

Hello Everyone

I am back with another mind boggling butterfly fact!!We have generally heard that all the insects including butterflies have two eyes. But actually butterflies have 12,000 eyes.Amazing but yes, true!! Butterflies have Compound Eyes.First let us get familiar with the concept of compound eyes.

Most invertebrates -- crustaceans and insects -- have compound eyes. A compound eye is made up of many separate units called ommatidia (singular: ommatidium). Each unit has its own surface area, lens, and optic nerve fiber. It receives light from a small part of the animals field of view. The animal's brain integrates these views into a single image. An insect's compound eyes bulge out and have a wide field of view. The lenses in compound eyes can't change focus, so insects can't see things that are far away. However, most things that concern an insect are up close and personal. The compound eye is very good at seeing things nearby and detecting motion, as anyone who's tried to swat a fly knows.

Butterflies has paired of compound eyes, it contains many small lenses through which it can see in compound, it has many small photoreceptor( celss which receive light ) through which all images come to retina and make it in one image so that butterfly can see clearly and move to correct direction.A butterfly has 2 eyes with 6000 eyelets or ommatidia in each eye. An ommatidia is like a eye within an eye. It actually divides the eyes in a shape of a disco ball & helps the butterfly to locate things easier. They work like the pixels of a camera. So therefore, a butterfly has 12,000 eyelets in 2 eyes.

My programmer is trying to convince me to move to .net from PHP. I have always disliked the idea because of the expenses. But he's tryiong none the less. I've been using Movable-type on various websites for about a year and am anxious about switching to another platform. I have heard great things about Is there a way I can import all my wordpress posts into it? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hello there! I know this is kind of off topic but I was wondering if you knew where I could find a captcha plugin for my comment form? I'm using the same blog platform as yours and I'm having difficulty finding one? Thanks a lot!

hello edith mam ! hello handa mam !
well , actually edith mam is right to some extent.Yes , all those creatures which have compound eyes see perceive objects through ultraviolet vision.the butterfly uses the UV light for vision and would be interested to know that each ommatidium is directed at a different angle from the others. Collectively they are directed in all directions. This enables the butterfly to see simultaneously in every direction. The vision is called OMNI VISION and the image the butterfly sees, is in the form of a MOSAIC. mosaic image appears to be like a pattern of light and dark dots rather like the halftone illustrations in a newspaper or magazine. And just as in those media, the finer the pattern of dots, the better the quality of the image.they do use UV light but mainly for orientation and the form of vision is called omni vision.
hope i have made myself clear enought now because the two terms are quite confusing .

Is it UV butterfly vision, Anjali? I did some research on this and I UV vision is highly related to the compound eyes charakteristikum of butterflies. But Aakarsha would give us the right answer.

Could u please tell us the term given to this type of VISION??

I am very sorry Aakarsha that this comment is very late. Actually, I did post my comment here before the FB posting dated 14th of April. Most likely, I forgot to press the "post comment". Forgive me, I only got "two" eyes.
Thanks for sharing this blog item with us I really did not know that butterflies have got more than two eyes. You are really bringing in mind- boggling knowledge which provokes more research.
